Identifying Stroke Risks in the Community

Within the next 45 seconds, someone in the United States will have a stroke. Within the next three
minutes, someone will die from one.

Statistics such as these prove that stroke, the third leading cause of death in the country, is a serious health issue. As such, The University Hospital hosted a free Stroke Screening Day at the hospital on Friday, May 5. A total of 98 people were screened.

Tamara Coley, MPH, (l), a health educator in The University Hospital Emergency Department Stroke Education Center and Dr. Yu-Feng Chan, the Center's director, helped coordinate the Stroke Screening Day.
Mohammad Ibrahim, MD, a Fellow in the Department of Neurosciences at New Jersey Medical School, monitors a guest's blood flow to the brain as part of The University Hospital Stroke Screening Day.

During the screening, guests received a free stroke risk assessment consisting of blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, as well as a transcranial doppler screening which measured blood flow to the brain. Using this information, stroke doctors and nurses at the screening were able to assess a person's risk for having a stroke.

Pansy Hansy-Lane (l), a nurse practitioner in The University Hospital Stroke Center, is joined by the Center's director, Adnan Qureshi, MD
during Stroke Screening Day.

Pansy Harris-Lane (r), a nurse practitioner in The University Hospital Stroke Center and one of the coordinators of the Stroke Screening Day, does cholesterol screenings at the event.

The University Hospital Stroke Screening Day was hosted by The University Hospital Emergency Department Stroke Education Center and Brain Attack Team and was made possible by the the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey.
