Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) refers to the use of a robotic surgical system to access and remove cancerous and benign lesions through the mouth. Head and neck surgeons at University Hospital are using the state-of-the-art da Vinci Surgical System to perform minimally-invasive surgery through the mouth with no external incisions to remove cancers and benign lesions of the tonsil, base of tongue and other areas of the throat.

The slim robotic arms are precisely controlled by the surgeons to reach narrow spaces in the throat through the mouth and perform the surgery. Patients undergoing tumor removal with the robot usually have a quicker recovery and return of function.
