Trauma and Critical Care
David H. Livingston, MD, Division Chief, Trauma
(973) 972-2400
The Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care provides 24-hour, front-line
attending coverage to the New Jersey Trauma Center, the state-designated Level
I Trauma Center serving northern New Jersey. It offers a full range of trauma
services with subspecialty assistance in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, urology,
plastic surgery and related fields. Dedicated operating rooms are immediately
available for critically injured patients. The Trauma-Surgical Intensive Care
Unit, staffed by the Division, provides ongoing monitoring and treatment that
is essential for patients with multiple injuries. A neurosurgical intensive
care unit receives patients with neurological trauma. A dedicated4-bed
step-down nursing unit is maintained to accommodate less severely injured
patients and those no longer in need of ICU care.
The trauma surgeons maintain personal, one-to-one follow-up with their patients
and communicate with case managers and primary care physicians throughout the
patient’s hospital stay and ongoing outpatient treatment.
The New Jersey Trauma Center serves as the medical control for the NorthSTAR
Air Medical Helicopter Transport Program, which serves the Level I and II
Trauma Centers of the northern and central portions of the state. NorthSTAR is
available for both on-scene and inter-facility transports, based upon severity
of injury and ground transport time.
