Program overview:
Volunteers at The University Hospital NJ graciously provide their time and talents to serve our patients and their families. Volunteers make up 200 vital members of our team. They work in a variety of areas to enhance the experiences of the patients and staff at the hospital. Some of the ways that they assist are by providing friendly visits to patients on nursing care units, assisting with transporting patients throughout the building, while others work on special events, or by providing administrative or clerical support. Ultimately, our volunteers are dedicated to providing the best experience for our patients and their loved ones.

Application Process:
All individuals wishing to volunteer need to complete an application that includes a background check and medical clearance. A current photo ID is also required. You can complete the application and submit it on-line. The link is listed in the “How to Join Us” section on the left side of the page. You may also come into the hospital and apply on site as well. Our address is:  150 Bergen Street C-Level – Room C431. Applications are available Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9am and 2pm. All applications will be reviewed. If selected, candidates will be invited to participate in a formal interview.

At Your Service Internship:
Our Internship program is ideal for students seeking to have non-clinical interactions with patients and guests. The program requires that students devote 6 hours per week during the semester to proactively round to meet patient and guest needs as well as assisting at our Guest Relations desk. Participants are required to complete a project in the hospital based on their area of study.

Teen Volunteers:
Our teen program is designed instill the spirit of volunteerism with our youth. Teen volunteers need to be 16 years of age and in the 10th grade in order to be considered. Reference letters are furnished for teen participants after they have completed 50 hours of service within a 3- 5 month period. The time volunteered should be consecutive.

Volunteer Requirements:
Volunteers are required to attend a 3 hour orientation program. This program provides education on all the areas that will foster success in the program. They include health care safety, patient confidentiality, and enhancing the patient and guest experience. Volunteers are required to provide 6 months of service and work 4 hours per week, though more hours are welcomed. Proper attire is required at all times, volunteers are provided a uniform jacket/shirt. Volunteers need to be in slacks and sleeved shirts.
